Woman and her role in society

Women face many social challenges in the current day and age. Whether it be securing an income for her family or raising children amidst the harsh economic crisis, a woman plays many roles.. Women are often over-worked and women’s rights are still very much an issue in many parts of the world. In India, women are forced to use fields and open spaces for defecation and have had to withstand chronic health problems due to the lack of toilet facilities. 

In spite of the various problems faced by women they prefer to stay quiet, Why?

This is because they are not confident about themselves, and are not financially independent. The society looks down upon the women who try to live life their own way. Change is inevitable but it will take time. Men are always considered superior to women. Slowly these notions are breaking. Now women can also do things which men can. 

The main issue now for women is their safety. They feel that they are not safe. Its partly true. Examples are the rape cases. If the women were safe then these would never have occurred. Not only rapes there are various other problems which a woman has to face in her entire life.

If I could help out in any way I am ready to do my bit. The women should help each other in times of need. When the women stand united, no men would dare to mess with us. The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.

A woman has so many roles in a society like that of a Mother, Sister, Wife, Daughter and others. She fulfils each role to the fullest of her capabilities. Moreover the best part about being a women is that you take care of your parents in their old age. It is a woman who gives birth and starts a new life inside her and maintains it for 9 months before bringing it into the world. When a woman has such an important role in the society why is it that the women are treated unequal??  This is a very good question and I would want it to be answered. But due to the dominance of men these women are not able to voice out their opinion.

Fashion Boom In India

Fashion is the prevailing style, custom or a popular style of clothes, hair, etc. of a particular time or place. A popular way of behaving and doing an activity also constitutes fashion. The business of making or selling clothes in new and different styles is also fashion. The fashion industry embraces both clothes made by individual designer for a small and wealthy clientele-also known as haute culture and garments produced on wider commercial basis-sold in high street shops, chain stores, departmental stores or by mail order. India’s fashion heritage is rich in its tradition, vibrant in colours and extremely attractive in look and style. In fact, Indian fashion varies from village to village and city to city. The country’s ancient fashion garments generally used stitching although Indians knew sewing also. Most of the clothes were ready to wear as soon as they left the loom. 

 

The changing fashion has resulted in the hem-lines of skirts moving up and down over the years. Before the Second World War and even some decades later, the length of the skirt that covered upto the knee was considered obscene. However, towards the end of the century, the length shortened above the knee.

The present-day youth are in the haute culture of wearing mix of western and Indian trends because of coming up of sprawling call centres, BPO centres, IT parks, mega markets and mall culture. Perhaps the setting up of the multinational company’s offices in India is one of the reasons of fashion boom in India. Men’s fashion draws a lot from films. The young boys not only imitate the glamour of men’s clothes but also their hairstyle. Fashion designing offers vast opportunities for learning the skills from famous institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT), Pearl Fashion Academy (PFA), etc. Many Indian universities offer diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in fashion and cosmetic designing. Such learning helps improve the creative skills and provides a cutting edge technology in designing. 

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) holds the fashion extravaganza to offer a platform to the exponents of Indian fashion industry and to give them right opportunities for displaying their skills and marketing their creations to the outside world for a high profit. With the evolving fashion and style and the changing face of Indian retail, our consumers are gearing up for a rapid transformation. Their spending too has been on the rise. Most of the organised retail businesses have reported an increase in their sales and consequently higher profits.

Good designers should be genuine, practical and give incentive in making the custom made outfits, designer dresses and costumes. The maker should create ideas according to the seasonal changes-winter, summer and spring. There should be an attractive combination of traditional, modern, local and foreign-creating every possible wearable product-and providing a wide range to the consumers.

The media plays an important role in the fashion boom. Various kinds of fashion magazines provide latest designs and styles in colour photographs along with details of stuff used, measurements, price range, shades available and the places from where they can be used. TV programmes give live telecast of major fashion shows conducted not only in India but also in all parts of the world. These programmes provide a good look at the fashion world in all the seasons so that the people can make their own choices while shopping. The stars shown in flamboyant dresses make an indelible impression on the consumers. This accelerates the fashion industry and enables it to prepare to compete with the best in the world. Fashion has become such an important part of the present-day world that even in colleges there are frequent ramp shows for boys and girls.

Fashion industry in India is now facing a tug of war between the designers for copyright protection although there are imitations by some designers from other designers’ work. There should be strict law to prevent such copying. The other important requirement is to ban shows and telecasts of such shows which show nudity in the name of fashion. Besides, there should be legislation against consumption of dangerous medicines like autorexia and bulimia which some models consume to remain slim. Fashion designing is a creative art and it should be promoted as such.

SPREAD SMILES ACROSS: THINGS TO DO - I

Today I will start with a quote by the great Karl Marx. “If we have chosen the position in life in which we can most of all work for mankind, no burdens can bow us down, because they are sacrifices for the benefit of all; then we shall experience no petty, limited, selfish joy, but our happiness will belong to millions, our deeds will live on quietly but perpetually at work, and over our ashes will be shed the hot tears of noble people.” So touching is this quote that it helps us to introspect and vouch for a change. I believe everyone should read this quote at least once in a day.

Each word has its own importance and prominence. We all have become money mongers who are lost in this useless race to achieve the unknown. Walking on roads or travelling by bus helps me notice and observe the world around me. Some people really care for the society and are working towards it but on the other hand there are people who are ignorant to all the miseries. It is so beautiful when Marx mentions that if we start sacrificing for others then our joy will be restricted not only to ourselves but to millions around us.

I know it is all easy said than done. Talking philosophically is much easier than acting on it. We are all tied up in our worlds trying to achieve happiness for ourselves and the people around us whom we love. So I personally cannot blame anyone who is not able to work towards the society but can only request that we can take out an hour a week to change things around us then we will start feeling good about ourselves, we will think highly of ourselves. What can you do? In this article I will suggest the first very basic thing which you can do to contribute towards the society. 4 such articles will follow after this which if followed religiously will make you feel good about yourself. Poverty is a big problem in our country and it is heart wrenching to see people begging to earn their living. I have seen people giving two three rupees with grimace on their faces with no sense of compassion. What you can do is not giving them money instead give them food or water which will keep them satisfied throughout the day. Start with this for now and “FEEL GOOD”.

Should "Economic Development" be given priority over "Environment Conservation"?

In the era of Dinosaurs, the environment was pure then why did they vanish?

Some decades ago lakhs and crores of people died because of Malaria and Plague which accounts for even more deaths than first and the second World War, even at that time due to environmental protection the nature was at it's purest form, then why these people had to lose their lives? Reason is clear that the graph for economic development as compared to today was less.

It is also true that economic development is necessary as it helps the society to grow in a positive and progressive direction and it's contribution to all fields including environment conservation can give productive and useful results. To meet the basic necessities of such tremendously growing population of a country like ours economic development is very important. It is comparatively more important to cure the lakhs of people dying of hunger than to think about conservation of resources.

Indira Gandhi said- Poverty is the biggest polluter. We cannot expect the developing nations (who are continuously fighting from extreme poverty and for existence) to tackle the green problems of developed countries, it'd be a gag to their development. Leaving that it is also not necessary that industrialization for economic development would put heavy pressure on environment. Scientific development has nomore let the industries remain a pollution source but has made them progressive.

It is also true that the only solution to meet the increasing energy demands is to preserve it and we also know that it is only possible by new and apt industrial tools. For example Tata Steel has led to modernisation in it's techniques, this has led to lessening of green house gases and pollution in all production chains.

This proves that economic development doesn't always oppose environment conservation but makes it possible. We nomore need to cut forests to get land, we now have "feed knowledge" for growing population, with planned knowledge of agriculture that uses less water, manure, fertilizers and produces more. It is another example of economic development being useful.

Only educated, conscious and concerned people, who don't have to care about their next meal, have the potential to praise the blue sky, rivers and green forests. Without educating every child and without fulfilling atleast the basic needs of every citizen conservation is not possible.

There are no two ways to it that education and proper place to live can only be attained through economic development. The conclusion is, that undoubtedly economic development is our priority but at the same time we have to think honestly regarding environment related issues. Poverty is our weakness, that gives a chance to other countries to exploit us and our resources.

Along with awareness, honesty and innovation, economic development would strengthen us and would preserve the environment.
